Augmented Traditions: Kagura and Topeng Malangan for the Future Society
This project explores how traditional performance arts, Kagura (Japan) and Topeng Malangan (Indonesia), can evolve through technology to address future societal and environmental challenges. By blending these art forms with AI, AR, and VR, the project aims to create immersive experiences that foster eco-consciousness, mental well-being, and cultural resilience in a rapidly digitizing world.
The project aims to position traditional arts as dynamic, evolving practices that offer modern relevance. By bringing these rituals into digital spaces, we hope to create a meaningful dialogue about tradition’s role in fostering resilience, eco-consciousness, and community in the face of 21st-century challenges.
Echoes of the Divine: Visualizing Bissu Rituals Through AI Performance

Echoes of the Divine: Visualizing Bissu Rituals Through AI Performance, bridges the sacred traditions of the Bissu—gender-fluid spiritual leaders of the Bugis in South Sulawesi, Indonesia—with cutting-edge AI technology. Rooted in Bugis cosmology, Bissu rituals are intricate performances involving chants, movements, and offerings that mediate between the human and divine realms. However, their role has faced challenges in modern times due to social, religious, and ecological changes.
Through this project, the rituals will be integrated with AI systems that collect and visualize real-time environmental data—such as air and water quality—during performances. These data streams will generate immersive visual and auditory elements that enhance the audience’s aesthetic experience and highlight the rituals’ connection to nature.
